Extraordinary Opportunities for Early Cancer Detection and Risk Assessment Research
Computer-Aided Detection
New development in computer hardware and software, informatics, methodology and technology can assist physicians in early detection, interpretation of laboratory tests, automation of laboratory tests, and estimating prognosis and staging of cancer. Virtual colonoscopy, for example, can provide a three-dimensional image of colon, help surgeons pinpoint abnormality for surgical removal, and enhance the detection ability of colonoscopy. If these technologies can be validated in clinical settings, they would certainly have the potential to reduce the false negative rate and perhaps decrease the false positive value, thus increasing positive predictive value. The emergence of new, predictive data, especially new genetic and biologic markers calls for flexible, robust, computational methods capable of processing large volumes of information and multiple covariate data. The CBRG will explore emerging technologies, and support the development and tailoring of new and existing technologies suited for early cancer detection.
